To provide pre-hospital emergency care and rescue services to the citizens of Augusta and Rockingham counties and the surrounding areas.

Membership Opportunities

Grottoes Rescue Squad has three different membership opportunities for EMS and Non-EMS personnel. The guidelines listed below are an overview. More complete membership requirements can be requested at our station. All members must complete the following probationary membership.

Probationary Membership

Any person who is 16 years or older may apply and be eligible for probationary membership. Applicants are voted into probationary status by secret ballot and must receive at least a 51% majority vote. Probationary membership will last at least 6 months and no longer than 1 year. All members under the age of 18 must remain on probation until after their 18th birthday.
To become a probationary member, you must:
  • Submit an application packet including:
    1. A completed application
    2. A completed criminal history request
    3. A DMV driving record

Active Membership

Active members are required to maintain a certain level of training. Drivers must have a current EVOC, CPR and completed probationary packet. Attendants must EVOC, CPR, EMT, and their probationary packet completed. The chief may way EVOC requirements at his/her discretion.
Active Members are also required to:
  • Fulfill the required probationary period
  • Run 8 hours of duty each week or 32 hours in a month
  • Attend 75% of monthly business meetings
  • Attend 75% of monthly training drills
  • Attend 75% of fundraisers

Support Membership

Support membership is available to those who are affiliated with another fire or rescue agency.
Support members are required to:
  • Fulfill the required probationary period
    -May be waived under discretion of chief
  • Run 8 hours of duty per month
  • Attend 50% of monthly training drills

Non-EMS Membership

Members who are actively engaged in supporting Grottoes Rescue Squad, but do not wish to become EMS providers, may opt to become a Non-EMS Member. Non-EMS Members are required to:
  • Fulfill the required probationary period
  • Support the squad by assisting with fundraisers, administrative duties and serving on committees
  • Attend 75% of squad activities
